What is Karate?

Karate is a Japanese martial art based on punches, kicks and blocks. Training is divided into performing basic moves (kihon), predefined series of moves (kata) and one-on-one fighting (kumite).

Why train Karate?

We think that karate improves fitness, wellbeing, self-discipline and self-confidence. As we progress we develop our skills and our abilities to defend ourselves.

Why train with us?

We are a welcoming local karate club for all ages and abilities. Our instructors are experienced, trained, accredited and vetted. We allow people to develop at their own pace. Training develops as the student's skill improves. Safety is an important part of training.

The club is a member of the Japan Karate Association England, the UK representative of the Japan Karate Association. Club members are able to train at national events with top international instructors. Many club members additionally train at other local JKA clubs.

There are a number of karate styles. We practice Shotokan karate. This is the most popular style practiced across the world.

We focus on basic techniques and katas to make our karate better. We practise self-defence moves derived from the basic techniques. We don't train specifically for competitive karate but in the recent past club members have been successful internationally.

Joining us

New students from beginner to black belt are welcome. Beginners can wear suitable loose clothing for the first few lessons.
