Karate is widely recognised as one of the best forms of exercise. The physical training promotes overall good health, fitness and well-being. The concentration, commitment and dedication required, help build a strong, confident and determined character.

Parents and teachers continually report on the improvement in the behaviour of children who train regularly at JKA England clubs.

This is because of our disciplined training and the emphasis placed on good etiquette

Furthermore, you will also learn a highly effective self defence.

What is involved in training?

Training is structured into three main sections – Kihon (basic techniques), Kata (formal exercises) and Kumite (sparring). Each section has a range of complexity to suit the different grades of students.

Sparring will be introduced as basic blocking and counter-attacking, and will progress to free-sparring which develops the timing, reflexes and co-ordination necessary for self defence and competition.

Karate can be practiced by men, women and children. Our students range from the very young to senior citizens. Anyone who is in reasonable health can train.

As with any sport, if you have not done any exercise for some time, we would advise you to consult your doctor first. Please let us know if you have any medical condition that we need to be aware of.

Club Instructors

The club is under the instruction of qualified 3rd and 2nd Dan Black Belts with over 30 years experience. The instructors attend regular advanced training courses dealing with all aspects of Karate. All gradings are conducted by Senior Japanese Examiners.

What is Karate?

Karate is a system of self defence developed in Okinawa and Japan. The word is formed from the Japanese words Kara (empty) and Te (hand), meaning that its practitioners -Karateka - are unarmed, but use their hands and feet as striking weapons.

What is Shotokan?

There are several styles of Karate which use slightly different training methods and place varying degrees of emphasis on issues such as speed, strength and range of techniques. Shotokan is a style of Karate which promotes a balanced development of all these aspects, taught within a system which instils confidence and self-control. Shotokan Karate has spread to become the most widely practiced style in the World.

What is the JKA England?

Reading Shotokan Karate Club is a member of the JKA England. The JKA is an association consisting of over 400 clubs.

It was established in 1966 for the development of Shotokan Karate and is affiliated to English Karate Governing Body. It is by far the largest and most successful single-style association in Great Britain with almost 11,000 members. Club instructors attending a 4 day Karate course in Guildford and other instruction events throughout the year.

Students are entitled to take grading examinations after a set period of training.

The gradings are conducted by senior Japanese examiners, and there is a grading syllabus for all levels. Coloured belts are used to denote grades.

Achieving Black Belt

There are 9 grades below Black Belt. These are known as known as Kyu grades with 9th Kyu, orange belt, being the lowest and 1st Kyu, brown and two white, the highest.

Students can achieve Black belt, known as 1st Dan standard in 3 to 4 years, with regular training and instruction. Because the JKA is associated with World Shotokan Karate Bodies, a black belt from our association is recognised all over the world.

The club is run by instructors with over 28 year’s experience.

Costs of training

Karate is a reasonably inexpensive pursuit. Club fees are low compared to many other sports and hobbies.

Eventually, you will need to buy a Karate suit, (called a “Gi”) but to start with just wear lose fitting clothes that you can move in easily, for example jogging trousers and a sweat shirt. Members will also need to purchase an annual licence.
