Reading Shotokan Karate Club is a member of the Japan Karate Association England who inturn are the UK representative of the Japan Karate Association who's roots in Shotokan karate are without question. Needless to say a grading in our club and especially black belt is recognised worldwide and your black belt grade and name are registered in Japan at the JKA headquarters in Tokyo.

The head of the Japan Karate Association England (JKAE) is Sensei Ohta, 7th Dan, based in Richmond, London. Sensei Ohta supervises gradings where students progress through the different grades (shown by different coloured belts) up to Dan grades (black belt). It takes over three years to achieve a Dan (black belt) grade. Gaining a black belt does not mean, as many people think, you've 'done it', it means is that you have learned the basics of Karate - it's from here that you truly develop karate for yourself..
